Study: Cannabis as a Possible Remedy for COVID-19
Two Canadian researchers believe a special strain of cannabis could be a promising tool in the fight against COVID-19.
New Focus for Research
Researchers Olga and Igor Kovalchuck spent years developing and testing a unique cannabis strain with the original goal of fighting cancer and inflammation. However, when the pandemic began, they focused their research on the potential applications of this cannabis strain in the fight against COVID-19.
Their findings were published in April in the online medical journal Preprints.
Cannabis and the ACE2 Receptor Mechanism
In their study, the Kovalchucks point to the importance of the ACE2 receptor in the spread of SARS-CoV2. The virus enters the body via respiratory droplets and uses the ACE2 receptor, which is present in various body tissues, including lung tissue, oral and nasal mucosa, kidneys, testes, and the gastrointestinal tract.
“Modulating ACE2 levels in these entry points may be a potential strategy to reduce disease susceptibility,” the study said.
Potential Blockade of COVID-19
After reviewing research from other scientists on cannabis and COVID-19, the researchers concluded that a specific strain of cannabis may be able to block COVID-19 from entering the human body.
According to their research, this would mean that this special cannabis strain could help prevent the virus from taking hold in the body and potentially causing serious consequences.
